Some very good advice from Peter by email on his DIY mini-refurb. He got in touch because "nowadays everybody wants to moan about bad service, forgetting those who go beyond the normal expectations."
"Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thanks for your help and advice, products worked well and the result amazing not a job that can be rushed, actually now looks too good to use however winter is coming a few photos attached.
I’m deciding what to do with the strip mentioned below, firstly going to remove all grease and marks as see how it looks, worst case I’ll be ordering a new one to finish the job.
Couple of things that I tripped over and had to resolve when getting to the towel rail fitting.
- Firstly cleaned around chrome caps with a feeler gauge, which broke baked on grease seal, and just slid down between enamel top and chrome cap, also gave enough friction to undo one of the caps.
- When taking out the chrome caps on the lid with chisel, the whole rod came free on one, so I had in effect chrome cap, slotted tapered nut and rod, managed to separate in situ, to reassemble I held rod so that it protruded about 50mm and carefully cut a slot in the end rod, then used a screw driver to refit, not sure if there is a better way of doing it but it worked ok. [note from Matthew; very clever!]
- On total reassembly I used a tap to clean threads of the slotted tapered nut so that the chrome caps screwed in easily, also put copper slip grease on the threads which is meant to ensure they do not seize up, works in the car world
In summary, very happy customer and wife is over the moon."
